FASD Conference

What: Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders and other Disabilities Conference. Continuing education opportunity and FASlink fundraiser.

Who should attend: Physicians, psychologists and other health workers, teachers, social workers, justice (lawyers, Crowns, Judges, police and corrections), parents (birth, foster, adoptive and grandparents), caregivers and students.

Where: Grace United Church, 990 Cathcart Blvd., Sarnia, ON

 

When: February 8th & 9th, 2008

 

Why: Disabilities may have varying diagnoses but often the needed services are very similar. Many overlap into several fields and agencies. Organizations providing services to those with invisible disabilities are invited to present workshops at this conference.

Ontario Ombudsman's Office
Description: The office of the Ombudsman is an independent nonpartisan body that deals with provincial policy and families are welcome to write to the Ombudsman to forward their concerns or complaints. Families have written to the Ombudsman, for example, about the ways in which the Education Act has not be adhered to, particularly in relation to Regulation 181/98 regarding integration in regular class.

Medical expenses/Disability Tax Credit Seminar

The Hamilton Tax Services is offering a seminar about the types of claims that qualify as medical expenses on the income tax return. Also to be discussed: the Disability Tax Credit (who may qualify, and how to apply), and the new Child Disability Benefit.

Financial Programs for Children and Teenagers with Special Needs

Who might find this workshop helpful? 

Parents of children and teenagers with special needs, physical disabilities and/or intellectual disabilities

 

What will the workshop address?

Our plan is to provide attendees with information about available government financial programs for families of all income levels.  Highlighted will be the brand new Registered Disability Savings Plan, the Disability Tax Credit, Assistance for Children with Severe Disabilities and the Ontario Disability Support Program.  Information will be available on other programs also.

Advocacy Workshops for Parents of children with special needs
Description:

Learn how to be a positive advocate in your child's life. A look at advocacy strategies to help you navigate educational, medical and social systems. Network with other families, learn stress reduction techniques and how to access resources in your community.

Resource Parent Education Day
Description: Held at the Network office: 22 Leeming St., Child Development Centre, Hamilton

Do you have a son or daughter with a disability? Would you like to support another parent who has a child with a similar disability or who is facing a challenge related to the disability? Our Resource Parents offer information and emotional support. They offer something other support systems cannot - shared common experiences. If you would like to be a Resource Parent please register for this workshop and learn about confidentiality, listening skills, resources and more.

Come and be a part of four interactive workshops designed to help families and their son or daughter with a disability plan for transition from school to community. Special Education Advisory Committee (SEAC)
Description: Come out to a SEAC meeting to see how members advise the Hamilton District School Board and the Hamilton Catholic District School Board on matters relating to special education. SEAC is composed of parent organizations often available to provide information and support to parents of exceptional pupils.
