We know we are not alone

The Network's Resource Parents are trained and experienced to be able to offer support to parents. Families are carefully matched based upon disability, and / or specific issues that arise and are linked to the child's disability.

Our Resource Parents are there to listen, share and be available when that's what a parent needs. Please contact us at hamiltonfamilynetwork@bellnet.ca

Sometimes, if your family member has special needs...
you do to.

The Gift of Parent to Parent Support

The Hamilton Family Network's goal is to have each parent who is strengthened and helped by a Resource Parent, become a resource to another parent. Each family of a child with a disability that becomes less isolated will help other families to support one another. Each parent that comes in contact with the Network becomes aware of resources and linkages to aid families that it may not have been aware of before.

and to the providers of services such as education, recreation, health and social services increases parents information and opportunities for their children. Stronger, better informed parents influence services to be more family-centred. These will all have lasting benefits for the individual and the larger community.

Please call us if you think you may be interested in becoming a Resource Parent. Call us anyway, we want to meet you and offer the information and resources the Network has available.

Would You Like To Be a Resource Parent?

The Hamilton Family Network offers workshops for parents who would like to support other parents who have a child with a disability. Parents are connected to one another for informational and emotional support. Talking to another parent who understands the special challenges and special joys of parenting a child with disabilities reduces our isolation --

Would You Like To Be Matched to a Resource Parent?

Parents who have just learned about their child's diagnosis often feel helpless and alone. Talking with another parent who has experienced a similar situation offers both informational and emotional support, helping parents to feel less alone and more hopeful.

Parents may want to talk with someone who can give them some specific guidance in the day-to-day coping and care of their child. Specific suggestions and sharing of ideas can bring a sense of security to parents who wonder what to do when their child does not fit the pattern for the usual growth and development. Sharing ideas provides the new parent with concrete skills and suggestions as well as hope for the future.

At the Hamilton Family Network, parents are also brought together around specific issues such as a new educational policy, trusts and guardianship issues, individualized funding, plus topics of interest to new and senior parents. It is vital that families continue to receive the information they require to ensure healthy, happy families with proper supports. Families are also kept up to date through the newsletter which includes a wealth of resources and articles written by families.
